MondoGlobo

The robust discussions happening among members seem to have reached a point where we need more organizational tools than what Ning is offering out of the box.

Some people have offered to donate hosting to the network, and a wiki would probably be a great place to start.

So, throwing it out to the whole community, is there anyone who can offer hosting for a wiki, and/or administer its installation and setup (they don't have to be the same person).

As for which wiki platform to use, we'll figure that out once we get responses from folks. Just reply to this post, or send a message directly to either http://mondoglobo.ning.com/profile/mondoglobo or mondoglobo -at- gmail.com.

Thanks!

Sure, both. I'll set it up today. Um. Possibly tomorrow. I'm (perpetually) behind on the paying work.

It'll start out as mondoglobo.wftk.org but of course we can attach it to any domain you like, later.

That's great, Michael. Thanks. Can you provide the specs of the install, since I'm sure there will be folks who are curious?

mediawiki or other?

I've set up a few wiki over the year and mediawiki with the wysiwyg editor seems to be the most popular, versatile and user friendly...

I'm going with MediaWiki, as it's nice and mature. I'm going to look at putting Elgg on the same site and possibly integrating them in some way -- not 100% sure how that'll work, but hey, that's what open source is for. :-)

My machine has Apache 2.2.3, PHP 5.1.6, and MySQL 5.0.27, pretty run-of-the-mill at the moment. It's cheap, and it's the finest machine I've ever had. I love this century.

Definitely MediaWiki. It's easy to use and install, and most people (that would be here anyway) are familiar with it from Wikipedia. I can help set it up if you want.

What help? It sets itself up! Man, installing software just ain't what it used to be.

Here you go, y'all: A wiki.

True dat.

The wiki works perfectly!

Are you planning on setting up Elgg as well? I haven't had as much experience with it as MediaWiki, but I do believe it should be just as simple to install.

You might also want to consider throwing both Drupal and Pligg on your box -- if nothing else, to give us an idea of how these open source initiatives impact our own goals.

Is it possible to use OpenID on a Wiki?

I'm talking to the developer of the first OpenCurrency I've come across and we both agree that registering for all these different social networks is creating new privacy issues.

I wonder what the requirements are for creating an open MondoID? Or, if it's really something we'd want to consider?

I looked at OpenID a couple of weeks ago -- I'm positive it could be integrated with MediaWiki, yes. Damn, but MediaWiki is cool. For many years I was quasi-active in open source, then when my business collapsed and I got into technical translation instead, it all kind of went on fast-forward for me. It's like stuff is getting done without me doing it. Or something.

I've put in enough time today already. Put a note on OpenID on the Wiki, if you would (I created an OSPT page for the platform topic.)

Oh, and the 'requirements' are dead easy. Yes, I'd be happy to set it up, because I wanted to do this for Despammed.com anyway.
I vote yes on having openID or some other type of solution.
I'm pretty sure Mediawiki and Drupal both support OpenID. I think Tom Brown knows the answer, if he's around.
