QuestionAuthority's Bush Rights Timeline featured on Reason.com

Big kudos to Phil Leggiere for compiling this time line with links of questionable actions from the Bush administration vis a vis government secrecy and our Constitutional rights as citizens of these here United States. As great a candidate for mass-mailing to all your loved ones as I've seen in a long time.

Thought control: "Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act"

This sounds like just the sort of thing we need to stand up against...

While its purpose is to prevent terrorism, the bill doesn't criminalize any specific conduct or contain penalties. But the commission's findings will be cited by those who see a terrorist under every bed and who will demand enactment of criminal penalties that further restrict free speech and other ci

Federal Court Precedent: "Return the Dude's Weed"

From the CBS2 article:
Eight grams of medical marijuana seized from a Garden Grove man during a traffic stop must be returned to him, according to an appeals court ruling directing local law enforcement to uphold state, not federal law. ... Kha's attorneys argued that the 10th Amendment to the Constitution effectively prohibits federal interference with California's medical marijuana laws, and the three-justic

BoingBoing on MondoGlobo

Some good pro and con arguments in the comments thread.
I worry when overall philosophical ideas are turned into cute catch-phrases and "projects" Yes, we know that our freedoms and liberties have been drastically impinged on (and dimantled) by a myriad of government agencies - but RU Sirius' idea of forming a coalition called "QuestionAuthority" (and The Mondo-Globo Network!) is too little to

Ars Technica on MondoGlobo

Ars Technica says:
The Internet has proven to be a highly effective medium for organizing and facilitating political discourse. In recent months, candidates like Republican Ron Paul are practically overrunning prominent social networking sites and using technology to give a voice to an agenda that would otherwise be largely ignored by the mainstream media and much of t

Corporate welfare based on "personhood"

From the SF Bay Guardian:
Major airlines house hundreds of their employees in San Francisco's hotels each night. They are arguing that because of past court rulings on corporate personhood — in which judges have deemed that corporations have the same rights as individuals — the airlines should be exempt from paying the tax when they rent blocks of rooms for their employees.

Authoritarian Hippies

Good bit of commentary regarding the alleged return of 1968:
I have pointed out that it has been feeling a lot like 1968 for a while now. The saddest thing is that many of the idealists who formed their worldviews in the 1960s do not see that they have become more rigid in their outlook and even more authoritarian than the society they rebelled against in their youth. The same applies to those younger people indoctrinated by that older generation of aging and ossified idealists.

The Innocence Project

A new report shows that FBI experts have given misleading testimony about bullet lead analysis for 40 years, and a task force has been formed to review thousands of convictions for signs of error. Unreliable forensics have led to dozens of wrongful convictions, and the Innocence Project seeks to ensure that our justice system relies on solid science.

Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) being adopted around the U.S.

Newly elected candidates are not the only winners from Election Day 2007. Voters in Sarasota (FL) and Aspen (CO) voted by more than three to one to move to instant runoff voting. 67% of voters in Pierce County (WA) voted to keep IRV on track for next year's county executive race, while voters in Clallam County narrowly rejected establishing an IRV option for now.More and more places now use IRV.

San Francisco held its fourth IRV election overall, with first-round winners in three cityw… Continue

Innovative method for routing around the Electoral College by 2012

Under the U.S. Constitution, the states have exclusive and plenary (complete) power to allocate their electoral votes, and may change their state laws concerning the awarding of their electoral votes at any time. Under the National Popular Vote bill, all of the state’s electoral votes would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by stat
